When President Mahmoud Abbas took center stage at the UN General Assembly last Friday, there was a resounding applause and standing ovation throughout the packed room from the assembly floor all the way to the visitor’s gallery that quite honestly lasted much longer than I expected. As he humbly nodded and walked towards the podium, it was evident that this moment and this very address were going to be historic. Routinely interrupted with cheering, even more applause and ovations as he emphatically made statements like ‘no one with a conscious can reject our bid for statehood,’ Abbas clearly had the support of most in that UN building. But it wasn’t difficult to see where the line of discontent occurred. Sitting in silent opposition were the few member nations staunchly against any notion of granting Palestine its own viable state through the UN. This small minority encompassed several European countries and the United States. Watching the tremendous dynamic between a handful refusing to recognize the independence of an autonomous people that the bulk of the rest of the world supports, begs the question, are we on the wrong side of history?

I recently read about a “study” that was conducted by bestblackdatingsites.org that seemed to get the attention of quite a few readers.  In this “study” (and I keep using this term loosely for obvious reasons), it was determined that there are only three qualified black men for every 100 black women.   The study uses the following criteria to determine if a black man is worthy of having a mate:

1) He is heterosexual

2) Is interested in black women

3) Has a high school diploma

4) Earns over $30,000 per year

5) Is not obese

6) Does not have kids with another woman

Bay Area, Blacks in Philanthropy Conference

Nonprofit, business and philanthropy leaders will gather on October 12, 2011, for the Bay Area Blacks in Philanthropy’s “State of the Race” conference and awards reception, celebrating local black philanthropists and spotlighting solutions that can fuel employment, entrepreneurship and innovation for African Americans in the region.

“We benefit from living in one of the world’s hotspots for innovation, and we aim to bring some of that energy to bear to collectively tackle issues facing Black communities,” said Cedric Brown, Chair of Bay Area Blacks in Philanthropy (BABIP). “We are also eager to honor the generous contributions of individuals and organizations who strengthen this region by investing their time and resources in important causes.”

The theme of this year’s conference is “Beyond the Neighborhood: African Americans Competing in the Regional Economy.” It will take place 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation Conference Center in San Mateo. The one-day conference will highlight major trends in the Bay Area’s Black populations from the 2010 Census; how regional markets and governance structures impact economic opportunities for Black communities; promising models for employment and entrepreneurship; and tools for using technology, policy advocacy and leadership development to advance social change.

This is my favorite time of the year for so many reasons. The weather is invigorating and the air crisp and fresh , the colorful fallen leaves make for beautiful scenery, and most importantly for me, fall represents change and novelty; out with the old in with the new. With that being said, autumn is one of the most ideal times to detoxify, cleanse, and rebuild your body (the other being Spring).
