If you’re one of those parents who like the space but you’ve out grown your SUV and just the thought of transitioning to a mini van makes you want to relive your college days, the Mazda 5 Grand Touring is the car for you.  I had the opportunity to drive this…well, I don’t exactly know what I should call it since it literally defies all of the current categories but let’s just go with “car” for now.  It’s not an SUV and not quite a mini van but the Mazda 5 is full of surprises.

Unlike some folks, I remember the day the people of Iran overthrew the Shah in 1979. Looking at our current contrived grievance with Iran, I wonder if the present administration does. Over the past year, due to the omnipotent pressure and power of the US Zionist lobby, we have seen multiple military attacks on Iran nuclear facilities and even the kidnapping and assassination of leading Iranian academics and scientist. We have even seen pressure placed on democrats by this lobby, in particular the loss of the New York 9th district congressional seat vacated by Anthony Weiner to such an extent that the President sent bunker buster bombs to Israel to appease their supporters. In fact just this New Year, Obama signed into law sanctions against Iran oil exports. I guess it was designed to show America’s Jewish lobby and Israel that Obama is hard on Iran.

Gracie Awards National Winners for 2012~ May 22 @ Beverly Hilton Hotel

Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (AWMF) is pleased to announce the 2012 national winners of the 37th Annual Gracie Awards. The awards will be presented at a black-tie Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Los Angeles, CA on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. This black-tie event will be hosted by Angela Kinsey of the award-winning TV show The Office. Local market, public and student award winners will be announced later this week.

In preparation for the awards Gala, Gracie Award statues are being engraved for such talented women as Christina Applegate, Giada de Laurentiis, Delilah, Angie Harmon and Rachel Maddow and in recognition of such dynamic programming as ABC’s Revenge, CBS News’ 60 Minutes and OWN’s Oprah’s Master Class. The Gracies each year recognize exemplary programming created for women, by women and about women in all facets of media and entertainment, as well as individuals who have made contributions to the industry. The awards program also encourages the realistic and multifaceted portrayal of women in entertainment, news, features and other programs.

Sometimes I just want to throw my hands up and ask why and walk out of my kids’ school with them in tow.

The work is not challenging, some of the teachers are uncaring and my kids are learning nothing more than how to answer test questions. I want them to be able to analyze, think deeply and be encouraged to be inquisitive. Shut up and sit down, should not be the vocabulary of the day. And insensitive test questions that reference counting how many slaves would get beat shows there’s a lack of cultural empathy and understanding.

But I’ve come to realize the sad reality that if you don’t have the dough to put your kids in a high-priced private school, then you probably have to settle for a half-baked public school education with a watered-down curriculum. See, the problem is that your child might get a good first-grade teacher, but then their burned-out second grade teacher with all of her mandates on test-taking and meeting AYP, will probably suck. Then the third grade teacher might be an OK educator fresh out the box, having recently graduated and all happy-go-lucky, but by the time Thanksgiving rolls around she’s done had it up to here being a teacher, counselor, referee and commander, and is calling out every other day—and the substitute who takes her place doesn’t really give a good hoot.
