As George Zimmerman walked out of jail late Sunday night after posting bail, and the city of Sanford tried to determine whether Police Chief Bill Lee still had his job, it gave us an opportunity here at MyBrownBaby to think back on how much the story of Trayvon Martin’s murder has transformed the nature of social media in just seven weeks.
It also gave us a chance to reflect on MyBrownBaby’s crucial role in lighting a spark that ignited this unbelievable story. Read more…
THE RETURN OF “THE DON”: NAS’ 10th STUDIO ALBUM, LIFE IS GOOD, ARRIVING JULY 17th ON DEF JAM RECORDINGS!
Always controversial and uncompromising in his role as hip-hop’s most influential MC – and often its most severe critic – Nas has completed his first new studio album in four years, LIFE IS GOOD, scheduled to arrive in-stores July 17th on Def Jam Recordings (#LifeIsGood717). The album’s new advance track, “The Don,” produced by Da Internz, Salaam Remi and the late Heavy D, made its premiere earlier last month on New York DJ Funkmaster Flex’s Hot-97 radio show. “The Don” follows up “Nasty,” issued as an advance single last summer 2011. A third track, “Daughters,” produced by No-I.D., will be available for sale through all digital retailers and services on May 1st.

A report yesterday on CBS Sunday Morning revealed a factoid that stopped us in our tracks here at MyBrownBaby: There are more than 70 thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds in the United States serving sentences of life in prison—and nearly two-thirds of them are children of color.
We’ve written here about the American obsession with prisons and how shameful it is that our country has turned imprisonment into big business, using the incarceration of unprecedented numbers of black boys as a means of keeping afloat small towns all across the nation. As was reported in a recent expose in The New Yorker, more than half of all black men without a high school diploma go to prison at some time in their lives. Read more…

HITS #1 WITH THINK LIKE A MAN!
By Torrance Stephens
Welcome to America, home of apple pie, Chevrolet, the KKK and Adultery. Yes, this week a political bomb fell on the GOP in the form of former Republican Governor and movie star Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed that ten years ago had a child out of wedlock with one of his domestic staff. Yes, in the vein of Thomas Jefferson and Strom Thurmond, it appears that old Arnold was keeping a long standing Republican practice alive – procreation with staff and hiding it under the guise of patriotism and service.
You’ve seen the trailers, the commercials and the ads, now GO SEE THE MOVIE, ‘Think Like A Man’! I have to admit that I was expecting another ‘Death at a Funeral’ with an all black ensemble cast that would have funny moments but would be an awful movie, but, it’s the exact opposite! The versatile actors, Kevin Hart, Meagan Good, Micheal Ealy, Regina Hall, Taraji Henson, Gabrielle Union, Romany Malco, Jerry Ferrara and Terrence J, i feel, were PERFECTLY casted! Even the script was written well. The fact that the movie was 2 hours long wasn’t even a factor as the flow of the movie was on point as well! Read more…

My God, this is getting outrageous: Today’s news on the police/school front has police officers in Georgia handcuffing a kindergartner, carting her off to the police station and charging her with assault because the little girl had a tantrum. We have written here ad nauseaum about the insanity of police getting involved in garden variety school discipline issues, but up to this point we were talking about junior high and high school students. Never did it cross my mind that police would be called in to control a kindergartner! Read more…
I attended the New York premiere of Think Like A Man (Screen Gems) earlier this month. I’ve been processing the film on many levels: as a woman in a committed relationship (I just celebrated 15 years of marriage to this comedian named Tmor on April 13); as a filmmaker and creative producer of color (yes–the ‘of color’ part matters), and as a consumer who loves a great moviegoing experience.
I’m not one to rave about films; I have my jaded insider moments just like most entertainment industry insiders. Because I know what’s possible from a creative standpoint, my expectations are high–and because I know the limitations Hollywood places on creativity, those expectations are rarely met, let alone exceeded. I’m usually left wanting more in terms of cast, script, story, or all of the above. But as a smart, sexy comedy, Think Like A Man garners a rave from me. Read more…
