Vitamin D is very important for everything from bone and muscle health to stronger sperm. But nearly half of all men aren’t getting enough vitamin D, and that percentage spikes among African American men living in northern regions, says a new study from Northwestern University.
NU researchers found that black men are 3.5 times more likely to be vitamin D deficient than white men, and those differences are most pronounced in the northern third of the country—including Northern California and even Virginia—where sun exposure is more limited due to climate and weather.
Most people get their vitamin D from a combination of diet and sun exposure. For white men, 15 minutes of sun exposure on bare arms, legs, and shoulders is typically enough for the body to generate a day’s supply of vitamin D.
But darker skin tones contain more melanin, which blocks the absorption of ultraviolet light, explains Adam Murphy, Ph.D., a clinical instructor at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School. Less light absorption means dark-skinned men are producing less D, and require up to 90 minutes in the sun in order to get 600 international units of vitamin D—the daily amount recommended by the Institute of Medicine. Hezekiah Walker has experienced some major developments since the release of his last album nearly 5 years ago. For one, he became Bishop of the Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ Fellowship, providing leadership to more than 30 churches around the country in addition to the Kunjalo Diocese in Cape Town, South Africa that he oversees – all while remaining Senior Pastor of his thriving Love Fellowship Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York and Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Secondly, Walker has become a mainstay on New York radio where he hosts a popular mid-day show for WLIB and a Sunday morning show for WBLS. Most recently, he created the Azusa Next Generation conference that brings together the nation’s most prominent pastors, speakers and worship leaders, ultimately revitalizing a defining moment in the Christian faith. The next conference will be held May 19 at the Jacob Javitz Center in New York.

The recent ‘discovery’ of corruption in New York politics should come as to no surprise. Well, at least to a skeptic like me. Politics have stopped being about ‘the people’ years ago and yet, people are still fooled by the politicians who will do anything to make a buck or take monies to further others’ causes based on the amount of the checks. Why do you think lobbyists make so much money?
The lobbyists are just legal corruption providers, operating, on surface, to appeal to whatever politicians they can get in their pockets, for whatever causes that will line their pockets further. They are just a mere step below the corrupt players who do it in the back alleys. Only difference is that the politicians allow them to bid for their corruption, er, services legally, as I am quite positive that there are more ‘perks’ included under the table that greatly influences the hands that are being greased. Though it may come as a surprise to much of the country, there are a whole lot of Republicans in New York state—so many that they actually control the state Senate. Which makes the new gun control laws passed by the state legislature and signed into law yesterday by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo all the more impressive and instructive to Washington, DC.
As the Republicans in the U.S. Congress roar about President Obama’s assault on the constitution by seeking gun control, the moves in my former home state of New York should be required study for every member of Congress. New York Republicans actually joined together with Democrats to pass the most stringent gun control laws in the nation.
In addition to expanding the ban on assault weapons and lowering the legal ammunition capacity available to New York gun buyers, the new measure takes serious steps to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill by making therapists report to the state if someone is a danger. The state would add that person’s name to a database that would be checked when gun licenses are sought or renewed every five years. Read more of this post

The arts have and will always be around as long as there is talent and an audience that thrives to be entertained. Thus, in theory, the business of the arts will also continue to grow as long as there are people willing to be artistic.
The arts as we know it, encompasses so many aspects that it takes on many forms, and has various functions to a variety of people. Dance is a fluid component that shows grace, poise and it’s such a great art form that, let’s face it, who doesn’t appreciate it?
Dawn Branch, dancer/businesswoman, started working on her passion at the tender age of 2 and hasn’t looked back since. Growing up in New York has its advantages and Dawn made sure it worked for her. From a young age, she’s known nothing but prestige in her schooling, having enrolled at the Bernice Johnson Dance Company and was a scholarship student with the Alvin Ailey American Dance School. After attending the world famous LaGuardia High School of the Performing Arts (Which spawned international celebrities from Billy Dee Williams and Ben Vereen to Tichina Arnold and Marlon Wayans), she received a BA in Media and Communications from State University at Old Westbury.
