Verbal Kent Releases New Album
Produced by Khrysis

Chicago MC Verbal Kent‘s new album, Sound of the Weapon, is out today. The entire record was produced by Soul Council member Khrysis (producer for Jean Grae, Evidence, Elzhi, Talib Kweli). In addition, the title track has been remixed by Grammy Award winner, 9th Wonder. The album features hard-line braggadocio, comedic flare and social awareness from the veteran MC.
On top of all this kid, you get a free track. Not just any track, a 9th Wonder remix. But be sure and listen to the original version of the title track by Khrysis who holds his own alongside his mentor – in fact, you decide which version sounds best. Read more…

New Music: Verbal Kent (of Ugly Heroes) “Raponomics” (Produced by Khrysis)

A Hypetrak.com Premiere

Hard beats & hard rhymes; both have been core staples of Hip-hop since the culture’s inception. And while artists of today often circumvent this with gimmicks, an LP that combines the two cannot be denied. It’s a simple formula that is and will always be effective.

 Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Fresh off of winning his very first Grammy with Tedeschi Trucks Band for Best Blues Album of the year in 2012 (Maurice was the horn arranger for the 11-piece ensemble), Maurice “Mobetta” Brown has also appeared on LP’s from Santigold, Ski Beatz, Prodigy, Talib Kweli, Cee-Lo, Diddy, Musiq Soulchild and countless others.

Maurice is prepping his latest release, Maurice vs Mobetta, or, rather, Maurice’s Jazz side versus his Hip-Hop persona. Maurice vs Mobetta features appearances from Talib Kweli, Consequence, Prodigy, Jean Grae and production from Fyre Dept, DJ Scratch and Maurice himself and its a mere sampling of what’s in-store on Maurice vs Mobetta; as Brown has more in store, not only on this new effort, but coming down the pike. Know that Maurice vs Mobetta is a gumbo sound lab for this dynamic young trumpet player-arranger-producer. Read more…

Grammy-Award Winner Preps New LP, “Maurice vs. Mobetta” & New Single, “Back At The Ranch” With An Assist From Jean Grae

New LP Includes Features From Talib Kweli, Prodigy, Consequence & Jean Grae

“Maurice vs. Mobetta” Will Be Released This Fall

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

You have heard Grammy Award-winning trumpet player Maurice “Mobetta” Brown before.  After all, he’s appeared on LP’s from Santigold, Ski Beatz, Prodigy, Talib Kweli, Cee-Lo, Diddy, Musiq Soulchild and countless others; but you heard his trumpet and not his voice.

Think Louis Armstrong and his trumpet uploaded for the 21st century to a Hip-Hop beat, and you begin to understand who this young genius is. Maurice is a classically-trained Jazzman mentored and supported by the iconic Wynton Marsalis and the legendary Ramsey Lewis. But “Mobetta” is also a Hip-Hop head for life, and that journey on this planet rock literally parallels the history and evolution of rap. Little wonder that Maurice not only blows the roof off God’s sky with his horn, but he also spits lyrics the way Satchmo spit his own brand of vocalese back in the day. Yup, Mobetta is a horn-playing-rhyme-spraying-dancing machine that Jazz-Hip-Hop collaborators like Donald Byrd and Gang Starr’s Guru, or Ron Carter and A Tribe Called Quest fantasized about in the early 1990s. No need to cram to make that Jazz/Hip-Hop experiment happen in these times because Maurice Brown is the living and breathing embodiment of it all, a one-stop shop destined to be this era’s Quincy Jones. And then some! Read more…

When loved ones pass away, it is never an easy thing to comprehend, wrapping your head around life’s one inevitability, one constant, brings little solace. Death is something we all experience in some form of fashion and it is personally inescapable. No one can avoid it and each passing seems to take a little piece of us as a result. However, the wonderful blessing of music reminds us of the person that was and shall always remain etched in our respective memories. Read more…

Arrested Development Celebrates 20 years – Featured on TV One’s UnSung & A Free Album

July 26, 2012 Leave a comment

Arrested Development Celebrates 20 Years & Still On A Mission –

August 6, 2012 – A Free Album And A Feature on TV One’s UnSung

(July 25, 2012 – Atlanta, GA) – It’s been exactly 20 years since Arrested Development (AD) bursted upon the scene with a trailblazing debut album, “3 years, 5 months & 2 days in the life of…” – Hip-Hop music mixed with soul, blues and funk. The group coined their style “Life Music,” music that would win 2 Grammy awards in 1993 for Best Rap Single (Tennessee) and the coveted ‘Best New Artist’, which AD is the first and last in the Hip-Hop genre to win. NAACP & Don Cornelius’ Soul Train awarded them as well with Rolling Stone Magazine crowning AD Band of the Year and VH-1 named AD one of the Greatest Hip-Hop Artists of All Time.

True legends in the game, they opened the doors for groups like – The Fugees, Goodie Mob, OutKast, Erykah Badu, India Irie, The Roots & Black Eyed Peas encompassing a mix of men and women with consciousness, melody & live musicality. There was a time when rappers weren’t accepted singing. It could be argued that without Dionne Farris’ soaring vocals on Tennessee, would the world have received the young Lauryn Hill crooning on hip-hop songs like “Killing Me Softly”?
