Four MyBrownBaby words about Blue Ivy’s hair: Leave. That. Baby. Alone.

I say this because after more than a year of everyone begging to see Beyonce and Jay-Z’s daughter’s face, they finally give us a full-on look at her smoochy cheeks and those big ol’ doe eyes and the most kissable, juicy baby lips, like, ever, and the innanets goes total bat crap and does what? Makes fun of a 1-year-old’s black girl’s hair.

As if we didn’t just finish having this same stupid conversation about letting black girl hair be after folk tore Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas a new one for having a less-than-perfect coif while she was busy performing the historic gym routine that made her an official American hero.

Over the past year, I’ve had an intense internal struggle over the rise of a parenting philosophy that makes me have almost knee-jerk reactions—that makes me respond in ways contrary to how I perceive myself. Progressive, liberal, forward-thinking, open-minded, not bound by societal constructs of race, class, sex and gender roles—that is who I believe I am. At least I used to. Until conversation on Twitter and blogs started advancing this concept of raising children—boys, specifically—in a gender-neutral fashion. This idea came to a head just before Christmas, when an online petition convinced the toy company, Hasbro, to create the perennial girl toy, the Easy Bake Oven, for boys.

First thought: “This is ridiculous.”

Call it narrow minded, but I take great offense when I continuously see things promoted to effeminize our boys. We’re fast becoming the generation where boys are being raised in a non-overtly masculine way—where they’re being taught to be less aggressive, less competitive, more restrained, gentler. And now, we want them in the house baking cookies. Word?

I think I might have been about 35 or so when I took my first drink in front of my dad. Maybe even older. I do remember that I was fully grown, with a husband, two babies, a full-time job, a car note, several books under my belt and enough sense to know that my father had to be eased into seeing his baby girl enjoy a glass of wine in his presence before I could even think about drinking in front of him. I’m also pretty sure that my mother passed away having seen me drink only once—at my wedding.

I thought this was just, like, the way with African American parents.

1. How has the internet changed the thinking of companies, artists and just the world in general?

The internet hasn’t changed the thinking of companies or artists.

Companies still want to make money off consumers and the internet gives companies access to learning what people want in their deepest dreams.

Artists still want to present their art to the most people who might find a connection (relationship) with the content the artists create and the internet gives these artists a more focused reach to the world.

The end result for companies and artists remains the same.  Artists still create.  Companies still exploit.

2. What prompted you to take your talents to the internets when you did so? And also tell us how long you’ve been in this space as well.

Blind dates. They’re awkward, uncomfortable, and just weird. Actually, no, they’re not…because they don’t exist anymore.

Think about it. Going on a blind date USED to mean that you and another party agreed to do the unthinkable: sit at a table with a total stranger, on whom you had never laid eyes, knew only the basics about, armed only with the hunch from a mutual well-meaning friend that you won’t want to run away as soon as this stranger bitch person sits down.

Now, blind dates mean a well-meaning friend has shown your Facebook page album collection default picture to someone (“Half Blind Mouse 1″) they think is less crazy than you compatible with you (“Half Blind Mouse 2″), and that person has given a cursory approval on you. Together, before approaching you, those two scanned your recent statuses and clicked your Twitter link to demonstrate that you (gentlemen) don’t exhibit “thirst” or establish that you (ladies) are not an internet heaux.

“See?! You guys are a total match!” says the well-meaning pal.

As I read the looong Twitter rant by Erykah Badu directed at Wayne Coyne, the director of her controversial new video, I immediately thought about the vulnerability of women and girls who allow others to have control over their naked or compromised images. If someone as intelligent and empowered as Badu could get caught out there, taking off her clothes (and allowing her sister to also get naked), letting someone photograph her and then trusting him to protect her and her sister’s nakedness, then how easy would it be for teenage girls and young women to make a bad decision that they wind up regretting the rest of their lives?

Some context: Badu and her sister have been exposed all over the internet for their starring roles in a racy, explicit video for Badu’s haunting cover of the beautiful Roberta Flack classic, “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” The music, provided by the rock band Flaming Lips, is quirky and moody. But it’s a naked Erykah and a really naked Nayrok Badu (Erykah’s sister) who elicit the shocks, as they frolic in the bathtub, immersed in liquids that look like blood and sperm and then gold glitter. While Badu artfully covers her privates, her sister lets it all hang out, showing her breasts, her quivering butt, even glimpses of her vagina. Many were left to wonder what Badu—who famously disrobed in front of strangers in downtown Dallas for her video “Window Seat”—was up to this time. What did it all mean?
