Happy Autumn Equinox everyone!

This is my favorite time of the year for so many reasons. The weather is invigorating and the air crisp and fresh , the colorful fallen leaves make for beautiful scenery, and most importantly for me, fall represents change and novelty; out with the old in with the new. With that being said, autumn is one of the most ideal times to detoxify, cleanse, and rebuild your body (the other being Spring).

We are flooded with toxins on a daily basis. From the air we breathe, to the tap water if we drink that, to processed foods, to household and personal body care products, and the list goes on. The presence of these toxins compromise our entire selves, mentally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. In our bodies intuitive tendency to create homeostasis, our natural defenses, organs, and systems normally handle detoxification for us; the colon, the lungs, the kidneys, the liver, and the skin, and so on.

There comes a point when these organs/systems are way overworked and underpaid, I am sure most of us can relate to that feeling. They are constantly being flooded with toxins and constantly attempting to eradicate them and at the same time are never being nourished properly due to poor nutrition and other risky behaviors like stress, lack of exercise, drugs and alcohol.

Toxicity is the root of many of the common ailments and health concerns we experience, unbeknown to us. Headaches, fatigue, congestion, backaches , aching or swollen joints, digestive problems, and allergies are among some of the symptoms of toxicity. This toxicity jeopardizes every aspect of our lives. During a cleanse, fast, or detox the body and its organs/systems are given a long over due break, and some much appreciated assistance via the flooding of the body with cleaning agents and nutrient dense re-building agents.

In a healthy, properly functioning body toxins are handled in 1 of 3 manners; neutralized (antioxidants are responsible for this), transformed (the liver has the ability to transform harmful toxins into harmless substances), or eliminated (the blood, liver, kidneys, bladder, and sweat glands are responsible for this).

When your health has been compromised by excessive toxins a detox program can support your body’s natural elimination organs and systems in handling the toxic load and restoring vibrant health and freedom from undesirable conditions such as; Headaches, Joint pains, Coughs, Wheezing, Sore throat, Tight or stiff neck, Circulatory deficits, High blood fats, Backaches, Frequent colds, Immune weakness, Sinus congestion. Fever, Runny nose, Insomnia, Fatigue, and Skin rashes

When you cleanse or detox what is being eliminated is toxic waste in the lymphatic system and blood stream, toxins in spleen, liver and kidney, hardened coating of mucous on intestinal wall, dead, dying or diseased cells, excess cholesterol, unwanted fatty tissue, and mucous from lungs and sinuses.

There are many ways to detoxify. Some methods of detoxing are: juicing (and smoothies), water fasting, raw food diet, exercise, herbal teas, homeopathic remedies, the master cleanse, saunas and steam rooms, dry skin brushing, rebounding, acupuncture, massage, herbal liver or kidney cleansing regimens, yoga, colonics, and mineral supplements.

For my detox group I chose to create a 21 day program that includes 7 days of the master cleanse, 7 days of fresh fruit and vegetable juices, herbal teas, and wholefood supplements (today is Kidney day….lots of watermelon and cucumber), and the last 7 days is a raw food menu that I have designed. In addition I encouraged my group members to use only natural products with no chemicals, use saunas and steam rooms, use loofahs to dry brush the body, exercise, mediate, use positive affirmations, and drink lots of water.

One of the zealous members of my group, had this to say when asked what her experience has been on the program thus far and how she currently feels:

“I feel alive, like I was dead and now I am alive again. I feel empowered, clear, confident, peaceful, like I am in control of my life. I feel connected to my essence, to my mind, body, spirit, and to GOD. It’s like I’ve been rebirthed. I have tremendous super hero- like amounts of energy, I have been working out like I did when I was in my 20’s . My blood pressure has normalized to 117 over 67 and I have not taken any medication since we started the program. I am happy!!!”

We are obsessive in this country about cleansing, perfuming, and adorning our bodies externally. It is definitely time for us to be equally if not more committed to the same internally. It is crucial to our overall health and well being to be free of excess toxins and to be careful not to overwork our already hard working bodies for the purpose of handling unnecessary toxic substances.

We cannot control the toxins in the air that we are subject to but, we can control the absence of them through consciously choosing the best and most natural food, household products, body care products, positive thoughts and emotions. And a couple of times a year do some deep cleaning and detox for a couple of days. There are daily preventative cleansing measures that can be taken as well for the maintenance of a clean, healthy internal body.These preventative measures will prove to be a saving grace throughout our journey.
