Sometimes science can deliver tasty little morsels of good news. Here’s the latest one I heard: playing with your kids can actually reduce your stress at work. Talk about your great two-for-one deals. Come on, that’s like saying that eating more chocolate cake can help you lose weight. That having more sex can make your marriage better. (Oh, wait, that one is true, isn’t it?)
When you’re a busy, overstressed parent, it seems like you spend half your time fussing with your kids, and the other half telling them you don’t have the time to do… whatever it is they are trying to get you to do at the moment. Kids being kids, their request usually has something to do with play. And according to a study of stress by scientists at the LIKES Foundation for Sport and Health Sciences in Finland, we should start agreeing to their play requests if we know what’s good for us. Participants in the study who engaged in more leisure-time physical activity showed lower amounts of job stress. How cool is that—the more we play, the less stress we exhibit on the job. Read more…

Pitt told Germany’s Bild newspaper that he and longtime companion Jolie have blocked their names on the computers of kids, Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, Knox and Vivienne, 3, so their international crew adoptees don’t have access to the crazy things people say about their parents. “They can’t Google their mom and dad. I don’t want to make myself dependent on what other people think.” Pitt added that he and Jolie ignore the chatter, too. “We don’t even notice all the noise,” he said. Read more…
You may remember Bonnie Sweeten out of Philadelphia from about a year ago. Sweeten is the woman who made a fake call to police from the trunk of a Cadillac, claiming that she’d been kidnapped along with her daughter. The truth? They’d actually taken a trip to Disneyland.
A judge put an end to Sweeten’s antics, at least for a while. She has been sentenced to 100 months in federal prison, equivalent to eight years, four months. U.S. District Judge William H. Yohn Jr. made things very clear for Sweeten.
“You’ve done great wrong, and you have to pay the price,” Yohn said. Yohn called Sweeten a “master con woman,” and guessed that she’d committed 2,000 acts of fraud over a five year period. Read more…
