How to Create Wealthy Habits – Part 1

Most people understand the saying that we are “creatures of habit.”  The part they don’t get, however, is that habits come in two forms: doing and not doing. Many of us can think of the things we actively do each day as habits which may be either good or bad.  But, when you don’t do the things you know you should be doing, then you are practicing the often unnoticed habit of simply not doing, which can be just as detrimental.  As I tell my clients often, “Stop telling me what you are trying to do.  You’re either doing or you’re not doing. There is no in between.”
So, if you aren’t practicing wealthy habits, then more than likely you are practicing un-wealthy habits. Once you acknowledge that there is no in between and begin to take action, you can move onward and upward. The choice is ultimately yours.
Here are a few ways to begin creating wealthy habits today: Read more…

Dr. Julianne Malveaux: What is the State of “The Dream?”

by Dr. Julianne Malveaux

I always feel inspired and elated, but also challenged and chagrined, at some of the celebrations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.  There are those, too many folks, who want to sanitize Dr. King and turn him into a dreamer.  Too many only quote the part of his “I have a dream” speech that talks about character content and skin color.  Too few remember that in the same speech he said, “We have come to the nation’s capital to cash a check, and the check has been marked insufficient funds.”  Dr. King was an economic populist, an anti-war activist, as well as a classically trained theologian.  Too many put emphasis on the latter, without acknowledging the former.

That’s why each year, I am excited to receive the State of the Dream report from United for a Fair Economy.  This organization does great work in talking about the wealth gap, and their annual foray into exploring the dream has looked at joblessness, homelessness, and austerity.  Last year their report shared facts on the relative pay that people of color earn in the public and the private sector and concluded that austerity programs that cut government jobs disproportionately affect people of color. Cree Summer Talks Natural Hair and Mommyhood

January 17, 2012 1 comment

By Curly Nikki

Cree Summer, one of the original natural hair idols, is On The Couch! And being the big kid that I am, I must say that it was pretty damn cool speaking with the woman behind Susie Carmichael, *whispers loudly* the only brown Rugrat. Her voice has breathed life into countless cartoon characters, but many remember her as the cute and quirky Freddie, from ‘A Different World’. During the interview she dished about her new baby girl, Brave, the resulting ‘Mom Bun’, and revealed that despite making a positive impact and being identified by her curly hair on ‘A Different World’, she wasn’t really feeling it. Enjoy!

When Messy Moments Seem Like They’ll Never End

Post image for When Messy Moments Seem Like They’ll Never EndNobody really prepares you for just how disgusting kids are. And how quickly you’ll fall right in line with the nasty. Like, why didn’t anyone tell me about that mom reflex that automatically catches vomit pouring from a baby’s mouth? Or that thing moms are inclined to do with their perfectly clean hands and t-shirts when there’s a runny nose but no tissue? Why do we so easily reach for the cleaning products when the projectile poop finds its way to the changing table… and the bed spread… and the floor… and the wall… without so much as a blink when it happens?

These things are standard mom fare. I cop to catching and cleaning up my fair share of baby bodily fluids for years without complaint. Mainly because my understanding was that the disgusting wouldn’t last always. Read more…
