BLACK EDUCATOR RELEASES NEW ANIMATED EBOOK SERIES TO TEACH CHILDREN ABOUT SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM)

Dr. Stephen Jones, project chairman of the Smart Bunch series and the bookcover

Springfield, PA (BlackNews.com) — The Smart Bunch is an animated eBook series that teaches and entertains children regarding Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). The series will help young children to develop reading, math, science and vocabulary skills. The first eBook was released on June 29, 2012. The owners are Dr. Stephen Jones, CEO, SAJ Publishing Company and Steve Williamson, Cgimate, a computer animation company.

The National Science Foundation reports that the US is currently ranked 17th in the world in the sciences and 25th in math. According to the National Action Council on Minorities Data Book, there has been very little growth in the number of high school students who are interested in STEM professions. African Americans only represent 8 percent of the engineers that the United States produces every year. There are only a total of 31.2 percent of African American students who enter college as an engineering major and graduate with a degree. Read more…

Post image for Nia Long & Sons On Essence Cover: Black Celebrity Single Moms Are Worthy of Celebration, TooNia Long is gracing the July issue of Essence magazine with her sons, Masai, 11 and baby Kez—looking every bit as stunning today as she did when we fell in love with her decades ago in Boyz N the Hood and love jones, and repping hard for us 40-something moms who stay fit, fly and blessed with the ability to be good moms.

In the piece, the 41-year-old star waxes poetic on embracing life as a single mom, her relationship with Kez’s father, fiancé Ime Udoka, her recent connection with her dad and living a fulfilled life. “I’m in my forties, post baby and I’m thinner than I’ve been in years,” Nia tells Essence. “The last step will be letting my hair go natural. That’s when you’ll know I’m free…”

Of course, her beautiful cover does not come without controversy. Apparently, the headline—”Nia Long: Single, Satisfied & Raising Her Boys”—has some folk feeling some kind of way about celebration of single motherhood by Nia and Essence. I dared wade into the comment section of the YBF, where I first spotted the gorg cover, and there, people are going ape crap over the fact that Nia is unmarried and has two children by two different men. Fifty Percent Unemployment for Blacks in New York – may become national norm

By Torrance Stephens

With the growing troubles of the Eurozone economic crisis, most recently as it pertains to Greece, massive bailouts for Italy and Spain and a recent request for European Central Bank support for more loans for Cyprus, the US economy continues to stall with projections of stagnant growth and perpetual unemployment above 8 percent.  Now, with major banks being downgraded across the nation, it is clear again that blacks will bear the brunt of the economic downturn.

Historically, blacks always suffer disproportionately in times of economic hardship.  Today it may be even worse than past decades, in particular in urban areas. According to a new study conducted by Dr. James Parrott, chief economist for the Fiscal Policy Institute, more than half of all of African-Americans in New York city who were old enough to work had no job at all in the past year based on an analysis of employment data compiled by the federal Labor Department.
