Mykelti Williamson, best known for his role as Tom Hank’s army buddy, Bubba in the 1994 film Forrest Gump, sat down with The Industry Cosign to talk about how he throws down in the kitchen, his role in Justified, and what he has in store in the new year.
What was your inspiration in creating the Bubba Style Spices?
Mykelti: I was working on a film for HBO called Buffalo Soldiers- with Danny Glover. We were in the middle of the desert in some little town called Benson, Arizona; there was no place where you could get like this smack down corn bread with the jalapenos in, they didn’t roll like that. I would have dinner at my house everyday, one of the actors came by to work on the scenes for the next days’ work. I said come on man, I have food at the house, so he came with me and the next day he spread the word and was like, I ate at Mykelti house last night and it was crazy and everyone was like, you didn’t tell me to come over, so I started cooking everyday. I would have greens, hot water cornbread with jalapenos in it, I was just throwing down and the word got out that I could cook. The cast was like man I heard you could cook, who made this sauce and I said I make my own sauce and seasoning. Read more…

There’s a running joke between my son Mazi and I about who’s more Mr/Mrs Christmas around the MyBrownBaby household. Both of us absolutely stan for Christmas music. Like, with an almost fanatical zeal that’s wholly unnatural. We start playing it religiously the day after Thanksgiving, and we pump up the volume big time when we’re decorating the tree, hanging lights outside, and wrapping presents. Best believe, too, that when our feet are under the table at Christmas dinner—no matter whose table it is—our Christmas play list is bumping in the background. It’s that serious.
Every year, I add on a few more songs to our play list—some of them old treasures that I’ve discovered on iTunes, others new offerings I’ve heard on the radio and purchased at the store or online. Old standbys include beautiful Christmas songs by Kirk Franklin, Whitney Houston, Dianne Reeves, Anita Baker, Brian McKnight and Harry Connick, Jr.; this year, I added on songs from Justin Bieber (at the insistence of my girlpies!), Jason Mraz, Macy Gray, Musiq Soulchild and Tamia, CeeLo Green and Mary J. Blige, plus some classic offerings by Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong that I copped on Spotify. (Please note: Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas” is an obvious tradition and should be on every Christmas music playlist ever known to man; he most certainly is on all five of mine. I stretched a little in the list below, however, by putting a funky version by Macy Grey, who is one in a long line of singers who remade the classic version.) Read more…

The Beat Goes On – As George Leonard, Founder Of Bedford Academy Applauds Its Continued Success After Bloomberg’s Recent School Visit
Founder & former principal of Bedford Academy George E. Leonard congratulates Bedford Academy for its continued success. On December 3, Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited Bedford Academy praising the Bedford Model.
Bloomberg candidly stated, “We’ve shown how you can improve a major, large system with all of attributes and disadvantages and resources and problems any other city has.” He went on to say, “A bigger pool should, we think, mean lower scores, but it didn’t because it shows that we’re doing something right,” shining light on the in place structures implemented by Leonard, and continued by current principal Muhammad.
In 2007 under the leadership of George E. Leonard the first graduating class of Bedford Academy completed the full 4-year program with extraordinary results: a 98% graduation rate, 90%+ attendance rate, each class member was accepted by at least two colleges, acceptances to successful pre-med, pre-law and Ivy League programs and out performing some of NYC’s “specialized “ high schools.
