The splash page will feature a Def Jam-centric editorial written by Datwon Thomas, Editor-In-Chief of RESPECT, former EIC of King and XXL magazines.
“RESPECT Magazine recognizes the rich history of Def Jam Records and the mighty influence it has had on Hip-Hop culture. Although Def Jam has lead the way in providing the blueprint for the music, they have also shown us how to walk, talk, wear and view life through their lens,” said Thomas. “This astounding project, featuring the game’s top DJs, is a collaborative effort of honoring the enormous contributions of the label. The artists and the executives that made Def Jam what it is today are responsible for being the creators of an iconic institution that defines the brand of Hip-Hop.”
It was just two weeks ago (on October 16th) that the Def Jam Recordings 30th Anniversary Concert presented the ultimate party event of 2014, highlighted by DMX’s climactic return to the concert stage. The Def Jam decades were uncovered by a mega-all-star cast MC’d by DJ Kid Capri, with a performing roster that included Warren G, Onyx, Foxy Brown, Big Pun, Keith Murray, Redman and Method Man together, EPMD (with Erick Sermon), Ja Rule and Ashanti, Big Sean, Fabolous, 2 Chainz, and closing headliner Rick Ross, who brought out affiliates Stalley and French Montana.
The Def Jam Recordings 30th Anniversary Concert lived up to the idea birthed out of Rick Rubin’s dorm room at New York University in 1984, with partner Russell Simmons. Def Jam Recordings has been responsible for many of the world’s most celebrated artists and entertainers – from the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy to Kanye West and Frank Ocean. Now in its 30th year, Def Jam continues to be at the forefront of culture and innovation.
The concert took place exactly one month to the day after the September 16th release of the DEF JAM 30 limited edition, ultra-deluxe multi-disc box set. The all-encompassing collection of landmark tracks from hip-hop’s most important record label is packaged in a limited edition turntable style numbered box with bound book and bonus t-shirt. From LL Cool J and Public Enemy up through Jay-Z, Kanye West, and YG, the two-CD compilation provides a comprehensive view of hip-hop’s evolution and development. Also included are signature tracks from Slick Rick, EPMD, Nice & Smooth, Onyx, Redman, Boss, Warren G, Montell Jordan, Method Man, DMX, Case, Foxy Brown, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Fabolous, Cam’ron, Ludacris, the Roots, Scarface, Rick Ross, Jeezy, Kanye West, 2 Chainz, Big Sean, YG, and a host of collaborators and featured artists.
In addition, Rick Rubin, one of Def Jam’s architects and founders, has curated Selections From The Roots Of Def Jam, a fascinating and never-before-conceived 13-song compilation of seminal hip-hop tracks from a variety of record labels that (mostly) pre-date Def Jam. Influences who informed Rubin and Russell Simmons include the Treacherous 3, the Fearless Four, Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force, Starski, Mantronix, and many other rarities, some making their first appearances together in any single collection.
