October 1, 2014, New York, New York – Film Life, Inc., announced today two additions to the 2014 Plunge Culture & Creativity Conference speaker and event lineup. Along with green living expert and author Danny Seo and the Black Enterprise Innovation Slam Competition, Frans Johansson, author of The Medici Effect, will participate in Plunge Talks on Friday, November 7. On Saturday, November 8, film director Gina Prince Bythewood will screen her new film, Beyond the Lights, this year’s Plunge Premiere, followed by a Q&A with conference attendees. The conference is produced in association with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMVB).

Frans Johansson spent three years talking with individuals and teams who were at the intersection of various disciplines and cultures. He combined the results from those interviews with decades of existing research in psychology, economics and management of creativity and innovation. His book, The Medici Effect, fully explores the concept of cross-field and cross-cultural combinations and offers guidance on how to make such an approach work effectively.

At Plunge Talks, Johansson will share his insight on how “Diversity Drives Innovation.” Acutely aware that, “In this new order of rising economies and beleaguered markets, understanding how to use diversity as power is more important than ever,” Frans Johansson redefines diversity beyond traditional social identifiers and demonstrates how today’s most innovative companies have used their existing diversity as a strategy to drive growth and profitability. Johansson will deliver a roadmap for how any company can make diversity its most powerful competitive advantage on the innovation front.  The Plunge audience will have a front row seat at the heart of this dynamic conversation and learn how diversity is affecting society globally.

This year’s Plunge Premiere, Beyond the Lights, is Gina Prince Bythewood’s newest film. Bythewood’s directorial credits include The Secret Life of Bees, Disappearing Acts and Love & Basketball, produced by Spike Lee and starred Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan, which won her the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay, among other honors. A Q & A with Gina Prince Bythewood will follow the screening.

 

Beyond the Lights will be released nationally on November 14, but Plunge attendees will view the Miami premiere of the film courtesy of Relativity Media. Beyond the Lights is the story of Noni (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), the music world’s latest superstar. But not all is what it seems, and the pressures of fame have Noni on the edge–until she meets Kaz Nicol (Nate Parker), a young cop and aspiring politician who’s been assigned to her detail. Drawn to each other, Noni and Kaz fall fast and hard, despite the protests of those around them who urge them to put their career ambitions ahead of their romance.  But it is ultimately Kaz’s love that gives Noni the courage to find her own voice and break free to become the artist she was meant to be.

As one of the first media outlets to spot Levina Lye’s incomparable talent, we are proud to see how far she has come in a short period of time.  Her  debut project, Pieces of Me, she wrote and executive produced has received acclamations from music critics around the globe with singles charting overseas. Never one to forget those who have supported her career since the beginning, the  remarkable Bronx bred 23 year old  took a break from her #LoveIsSuicide tour to bring us up to date.

 

Now that you EP has received so much praise by so many music execs, how do you feel about the overall perception?

I think my EP has been well received by the people but most importantly it’s relatable. It was created to be real and people like that. I want people to know I’m no gimmick. I’m the real thing.

What is your favorite song off the EP and why?

Abandoned is my favorite song off the EP  because I really felt that way at one point. All the songs are written from the heart but Abandoned is so deep to me. The melody and harmonies make me love it even more.

As the executive producer, you arranged the songs in a specific order to narrate a story.  Please explain why it was important to you?

I always need things to make sense. Everything I do comes from a creative place. Pieces of Me tells my story of past experiences in order. It has its highs and its lows ,just like life.

Having written from personal experience, has completing Pieces of Me been therapeutic? If so, in what ways?

It definitely has helped me to move on and overcome past experiences. Writing Pieces of Me has taught me so many things about myself, most importantly how strong I really am. It’s a message to people that no matter how bad it seems sometimes, there is always a way to find positivity.

You have been performing all over NYC, what has the experience been like for you as an emerging artist?

It’s exciting and it is honestly so humbling. I get to do what I love and share my music with the world. It’s a beautiful thing to get up on a stage and have people appreciate my art.

What has been the biggest disappointment to you since the EP dropped?

I can honestly say there are no disappointments at all. I accomplished what I set out to do as far as completing the EP. I’m currently touring and I love it!  I tend to try and look for the best in every situation. I expect there to be doubters and people too proud to support but at the end of the day I know what it is. My talent and humility will speak for itself. Like my project manager/ partner says, “You have to take the sugar with the sh*t.”

As an acclaimed singer/songwriter, you have turned down several songwriting opportunities.  Can you explain why it so important that you perform your songs exclusively? Has there been any backlash?

My songs are so personal to me that I couldn’t imagine anyone else singing them. I hold my words close to heart and so they are really hard to let go. So far there’s been no negativity, I think my sentiments are appreciated.

You have accomplished so much in such a short period of time, what would you consider the key to your success?

I just stay focused on moving forward. This is my dream, my biggest passion in life, so I’m determined to make it happen.

One of the few independent artists to own their masters independently, what advice do you offer aspiring talent as far as business?

Do as much as you can on your own. Most importantly, invest in your dreams. It’s a beautiful feeling to make things happen. Remain consistent!

Are there plans for a complete project? If so, when?

I’m always working so new music is definitely on the way soon. I really want the world to hear Pieces of Me so that’s my main focus for now.

Do It for You instrumental (City Lights). The “I Am Free” EP was produced, written, recorded, mixed and arranged by the lovely songstress in her studio in London, Multivizion Music.

 

When asked what thoughts crossed her mind when writing the “I Am Free” EP and what was her inspiration, Ms. Sebastian states “After moving to London in 2006 and starting my life from scratch on my own, while stepping into adulthood I have seen many contradicting sides of it. Starting my business, having my child at the age of 21, sudden detention by mistake made by an immigration officer, a case which rose important questions within myself and took a couple of years to resolve.”

In the world of sports, blacks are in abundance on the field and on the court, but when it comes to management, ownership and representation, the numbers fall off drastically. You would think that in this day and age, black players would feel comfortable being represented by other blacks, but sadly, it isn’t so.

Sports agent, Nate McCray, wants to help change the perception that blacks are only good for playing and not successful off the field. This is what makes him work three times harder than his white counterparts to represent his client to the best of his ability to help sustain a successful career on and off the field.

In an effort to inform and transform urban youth into cognizant leaders of tomorrow through distinct travel, cultural service, and international experiences, PYNK Magazine and PYNK Girls Care have partnered with non-profit organization, TWIYO (The World Is Your Oyster) to provide the opportunity for students from underprivileged areas to travel to Martha’s Vineyard over the July 4th holiday weekend.

On July 2nd, the students will travel from East New York Brooklyn to Martha’s Vineyard. The students will go on a tour of Martha’s Vineyard TV studios, as well as participate in other activities to expand their horizons.

Be it the sounds of nature or the rhythms of early tribes or the nursery rhymes we hear from the lips of our mothers and grandmothers growing up. Whether melodies, the timing of the songs or anything associated with music, it will stay a part of our lives.

The thing that may change is how and/or where we hear it. This is where radio plays an important part in our everyday lives. Radio is still an integral part of the human experience. At one point in time, we’d only have one place to consume it.

Not anymore. With us being able to listen it to it online, on our phone and if we are lying down in bed at home, we can bring it up on the television screen. And for this reason, Helen Little, will always be relevant and have a place where we can hear her voice. In preparation for Father’s Day, Real Dads Network expects hundreds of men, children and women of all ages to celebrate and honor Black dads who are both exemplary role models and community leaders. The Hechinger Report, a non-profit organization that contributes stellar reporting on education issues, asked Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Nick Chiles to go to Mississippi to start chronicling the educational and societal woes of Black boys in the state, he jumped at the chance. Howard Stevenson is a professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania whose area of specialization is a topic most white educators would probably rather sit for a root canal than confront head-on: How their unwillingness or inability to deal with their own racial biases and stereotypes leads to horrible and stressful interactions with black boys in their classrooms—interactions that can have a devastating effect on the boys’ academic achievement.

For whites and certainly even for African Americans, thinking about, discussing and recounting a racial encounter can be enormously stressful. Stevenson demonstrated by having the participants in his Coseboc workshop pair up and tell each other about any racial incident that came to mind. When asked to share their feelings later, the participants were surprised and alarmed by how much stress they felt during the retelling, almost like they were living through it again. Read more…
