‘Justice While Black’: A Must-Have Book for Black Families in These Scary Times

As an author, one of the most gratifying experiences you can have is for people to tell you that your book saved their life, or was extremely useful and relevant to them. But when you write a book like “Justice While Black: Helping African-American Families Navigate and Survive the Criminal Justice System,” your feelings are a lot more complicated. I was hoping it would prove useful to the Black community, but it’s turned out to be waaay more relevant than I’d ever want.
When Atlanta attorney Robbin Shipp and I sat down more than a year ago to start writing “Justice While Black,” it was the specter of Trayvon Martin that hung over the room. The Black community had just suffered through the numbing shock of George Zimmerman’s acquittal. For nearly two decades, Robbin had been witnessing the parade of Black males carted through the criminal justice system in Georgia. For just as long, I had been writing about the stultifying list of African Americans who had been summarily executed by American law enforcement, often for no apparent reason other than their skin color. We both felt compelled to do something, to use our respective talents to make a difference.
But in the months leading up to the book’s release and in the two weeks since “Justice While Black” has been out, the nation has witnessed an outrageous number of African Americans dying or suffering at the hands of law enforcement. As the book’s publication date approached, I was even asked to pen an essay in the October issue of Ebony, looking at the issue from a dad’s perspective, because the topic of the book was so incredibly relevant. Why You Should Go See ‘Olympus Has Fallen’
Some people go to the movies for the sheer enjoyment of being entertained. There are some movies that stretch the limits of your imagination (or theirs) in their interpretation of things we may do on a daily basis or even things we see and/or read about. There is also the fantasy aspect and in some cases, situations that seem implausible when you do view the film at hand. If you are the type that enjoys leaving your ‘world’ when going to the movie theater, then ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ just might fill your hunger to leave your mind elsewhere, yet, bring your imagination to the movie seat.
The big budget movie doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the graphic scenes shown on screen. It’s not at a loss for action and some may even consider it quite thrilling. In fact, the body count is quite high and if you are into something like that, your appetite will be whet. If chilling, violent action is your thing, then reserve your ticket now. Read more…

We got a chance to review the new HTC 8X with Windows Phone 8. I got the navy blue phone which was really nice. No doubt you’re asking the question: How is it different than any other phones, and any other Windows Phone 8 devices. Well keep reading to find out. As usual, I’ve divided the review into two main portions. The stuff I liked and the stuff I didn’t.
What I liked:
Size:
The screen is 4.3 inches which isn’t the largest display out there, but it definitely gives you plenty of room to see what’s going on. The dimensions end up making it long (132.35 x 66.2 x 10.12 mm) but it really fits the Windows Phone motif where you have to scroll forever to get to what you want. It’s also really slender so it’s comfortable to hold on to.
